Squaring The Circles
I've got a bit behind on my blip journal - sometimes life just gets in the way, but I'll do my best to catch up. All the following images were taken on their actual days but some memories of events could be starting to get a little hazy! :-)
Today's images were taken at our neighbouring village Eccles "Rec" (recreation ground) as when we drove past it we saw a sign advertising a forthcoming fun fair. When we stopped to have a look we could see that they were still setting up before they opened up later in the day. I took a few shots but when I looked at them on the screen on the back of my camera I wasn't that enthused (more of which later) and sauntered across instead to a small group of sculptures at the far end of the field. My main image is actually of two of these almost miniature column like structures - one covered in mostly iridescent square tiles and an adjacent one in multicoloured circled glass so I lined them up in close up in my viewfinder in an attempt to square the circles. :-) I just loved the colours and the light reflecting back from the tiles and the glass.
Time for some fun facts people! Squaring the circle is actually a geometric term and is a problem first proposed in Greek mathematics. It is the challenge of constructing a square with the area of a given circle using only finite number of steps with a compass and a straightedge. The difficulty of the problem raised the question of whether specified axioms or Euclidean geometry concerning the existence of lines and circles implied the existence of such a square.
Last night as I was attempting to do the aforementioned catching up on my blip journal I had a quick look back at my fun fair images and decided in retrospect that I quite liked them so I've included them as extras for your enjoyment! :-)
