The camera at one Osprey nest somewhere in Eastern Finland has been my priceless daily entertainment for a couple of years now. The behavior of the male and the female and the youngsters in the Osprey family have not been much different from those roles in a human family.
But this year has been different from the beginning. The female lying on the eggs has spent more time alone and without food than I have ever seen.
What happens is that as the male flies in, the female flies out and the male takes her place on the eggs. I have not been able to measure how long the female stays out, but I must assume that she can capture a fish within that time, as she is still alive! I have never seen even a piece of fish in the nest.
In this picture the male has just arrived and the female is going to fly out soon.
