Oshima

“O” means big and “shima” means island. We are on the biggest of the Tokyo Islands which is essentially an active volcano. Historically it erupts every 36 to 38 years and last erupted in 1986. Those good at maths will understand why the expedition leader checked the seismic forecast for today before we set off hiking from the edge of the caldera up to the highest viewing point. It’s not the first time I have been rewarded for a steep climb with a picture of the view on a clear day (extra).

Our local guide in the main picture was delightful. She has relocated from Yokohama to this island of 7000 people to give her children a better life.

Although the islands market themselves as tourist destinations we were the only tourists today and we were welcomed not only by the local dignitaries but also by the lady governor of Tokyo.
