Sgwarnog: In the Field

Shield

I brought my 23/24 football season to a close with two more cup finals at the West Riding County FA ground in Woodlesford.

Both games were under the auspices of the West Riding County Women’s Football League, with Bradford (Park Avenue) and Golcar United contesting the Shield and Sherburn White Rose and Leeds Modernians challenging for the League Cup.

Rain and thunderstorms were forecast throughout the day, but conditions remained pretty good while the games were being played, with downpours restricted to my walks to and fro stations.

In the Shield, Avenue and Golcar went to a penalty shootout after an entertaining 2-2 game, with the Bradford team victorious (main image).

The League Cup went the way of Modernians (team picture in extras), with a 2-0 win over Sherburn, which gives them the league and cup double.

In between the games I walked down Fleet Lane for a fleeting visit to St Aidan’s RSPB reserve, where some Canadian goslings were being escorted across the lake (extra).
