Memorial
A stone statue of a woman and child looking out to sea stands hauntinhly at the entrance to Gloup Voe in north Yell Shetland and beneath it the names of lost fishermen 38 in total lost in a gale in1881 from the small community of Gloup from which it never recovered its past success as a fishing station. The men had been to sea as usual in their 'sixerns' line fishing open boats with a sail and six crew. The Vikings described the North Atlantic as the old grey widow maker, and indeed hundreds of Shetland men had drowned leaving women and children behind to mourn.
