Moments before, this monarch caterpillar was happily stretched out showing its colourful stripes and tiny feet. See the extra photo.

Unfortunately I accidentally disturbed it which instantly sent it into the protective mode seen in the main photo.


The first day of winter in the southern hemisphere arrived with warmer than usual temperatures in NZ. Here in Motueka it reached a high of 19C, and while many parts of NZ experienced windier than usual conditions, we enjoyed a cloudy day with a distinct lack of wind.
