Task four: It's that man again.
Task four and I'm standing in the goal Field. All eyes are turned westwards searching the lenticular stewn sky for the first flash of sunlight on leading edge. It’s another 30 km task up and down the valley, which sounds easy but Manfred describes the flying as "Shitty”. Others use stronger language. Above us the cummis are heedlessly racing from the northwest over the ridge of the Nordkette but here at goal it's a light easterly. At the Jenbach tumpoint a strong valley wind is blowing and many go down here, some just safety's sake. There are rumours of pilots infringing airspace just to get away from the turbulence.
Someone looking through binoculars shouts in German but all I catch is "Manfred"
I don't know how he does it but Heir Ruhmer is always there. Surely it can't all be down to his cut down A frame wires! the first time I have watched him come into goal; no wingovers no yodel - Just a confident float across the goal line and a mediocre, almost unstylish, flare before he waddles over and plonks his Wallaby Ranch Laminar in the usual space that you just know is reserved for those who are there first. More pilots are racing in. A couple of the class 2 guys release water ballast as they come streaking over. They look jet-propelled.
