Nature can be cruel (DS404)

We've had a day tidying up after our time away and late on came across this nest box which has come away from the tree it was fixed to.  I had seen great tits going in and out a couple of weeks back, but not much sign of them in the few days before we left.  It looks like the nest has been abandoned, possibly due to the attentions of crows and starlings we had seen around in increasing numbers. No eggs, shells or dead chicks as far as I can see though - not sure about whatever is flattened against the back though.
