The Whangie

We visited The Whangie for the first time this afternoon. About a 45 minute walk from the car park, well worth it.

There are two theories for its origin:

1. The Devil's Tail
According to local folklore, the Devil created The Whangie in a fit of rage at some witches. As the story goes, the Devil was flying over the Kilpatrick Hills when he struck the rock with his tail, creating the deep cleft and the unusual rock formations.

2. Glacial Plucking
As glaciers moved across the landscape during the Ice Age, they exerted immense pressure on the rocks beneath. The glacier froze to the bedrock, and as it advanced, it pulled away large chunks of rock. This process left behind the distinctive fissure and overhanging walls.
