Leaving Skåne
Time to go home. I have a long drive ahead of me in blazing sunlight but I will take the time I need to get there safely.
This part of Skåne, in the southeast corner, is called "Söderslätt", or "Österlen", both names indicates that it's flat but it's also one of the most fertile parts of Sweden. Being flat also means it can be very windy. The houses on the plain are built in low places for shelter and the small villages are surrounded by high trees. Along the roads there are often long lines of willows, kept low by pruning or pollarding(?) them to minimise the risk of having the soil blown away but also for feeding the animals.
I wanted to avoid the motorways for as much of the trip as I could, they are more fun and pretty to drive along, but took a wrong turn and ended up on a gravel road in a scenery that is a little unusual to see today. This is a classic, but rare image of Skånes Österlen, the east plain.
