CRICKET
I had a few things to do in the village so I walked down there this afternoon. I went down the back lane through the allotments and this brings me out at The Glebe where the village football and cricket clubs are. Someone was mowing the cricket pitch so I took a quick shot through a gap in the fence for the Mono Monday challenge. The theme is " something sporty" . Thanks to Pinkhairedlady for hosting
My son Neil played cricket for the village team when he was younger... Under11's, Under15's, Second team and then for the First team. I was roped in to do the cricket teas at The Glebe which was fun but rather stressful as you never knew when the teams would be coming in for their tea. Sometimes the last wickets would fall quickly so you weren't ready and it was a mad rush to get the pots of tea made and put the food on the tables. ... or the tail enders would play well and the innings would last longer so you had to cover up the food again to keep it fresh. Neil doesn't play cricket these days but he follows cricket avidly - and his job involves cricket statistics.
Ive added an Extra photo to my blip - a page from a cigarette card album of " Cricketers from 1938". The chap in the centre is Len Hutton who played for Yorkshire and England. Wisden Cricketers' Almanack described him as "one of the greatest batsmen in the history of cricket".
First stop in the village was the chemists to collect my repeat prescription. There were lots of people in there hanging around waiting for their prescriptions to be filled. There was only one dispensing chemist behind the counter. A few of those waiting were told their medicines weren't available --- or they could only have part of what was prescribed. I had to wait around 10 mins for my items - and part of it was unavailable. I need to call, back another day for the rest.
As I was waiting in the chemist a lady I recognised sat next to me -- it was one of Becky and Neils old teachers from primary school. She later became headteacher at the school. We got talking and she remembered Becky and Neil. We had a nice chat about our families.
Next I dropped off a bag of stuff at the charity shop and did some food shopping in Herons and Tesco. Picked up 2 parcels in Tesco as well.
Watched the football on TV this evening... a friendly match between England and Bosnia & Herzegovina played at St James Park in Newcastle. The first half was uneventful and boring.... but England managed to score 3 goals in the second half to win the game 3 - 0.
Weather today was warm and sunny. Hope it stays dry tomorrow as I have in mind mowing the lawn.
