Dulas Bay Wrecks

Anglesey Day 2 takes us to the northern coast. G is keen to show me the shipwreck he saw a few weeks back and has discovered the single track road that leads to Dulas Bay, the area he and his brother walked around on the last stretch of their coastal walk.

The tide is out and much of the bay is now the silty estuary mud. The sky is heavy, so unlike yesterday, but there is colour from banks of sea pinks and stranded layers of sand, mud and seaweed.  The whole area is deserted despite a few dwellings, peaceful but for the cries of seabirds.  In the distance I can see the hulk of the Manx Rose; I must admit to being less than enthusiastic about the walk needed to get closer, but I do love wrecks, so decide to make the effort - and I’m so glad I did.

The area is beautiful, even in a dull day - in fact, there’s something about the melancholy light that adds to the atmosphere of this place, so often the graveyard of ships that just beyond the bay there is an island with a round, cone-topped structure that was built in 1821 by James Hughes to store food and provide shelter for shipwrecked seamen.

It’s impossible to reach the wreck without getting very wet, but we walk as far as we can along the muddy beach to get the closest view. She’s a beautiful wooden structure, patches of paint remaining in places, the majority bleached by elements. Closer to us is another wreck, anonymous and in far worse repair, like the carcass of a huge sea creature broken open by the tides.

Edit: The carcass forms my main today, and was originally a mono image which seems to suit its state of decay and dereliction, but both G and Nicky have persuaded me it’s better in colour!  In extras, there’s another view in mono, the wreck on the Marx Rose in the distance. As for the Rose herself, there’s a mono and a colour view, with a landscape collage of the area as a context.

Once more, apologies for lack of comments etc - I have the greatest admiration for those who manage this whilst away!
