Kirkwall cathedral of St.Magnus

According to legend St. Magnus was a peace loving and kind Christian. But as a Viking Earl he was expected to fight and would not do so with those he had no quarrel with. His popularity against the other brutal Earls resulted in a quarrel ending in his execution. Despite efforts to quash the cult of Magnus, after numerous miracles and dreams the Bishop was eventually convinced. He recovered Magnus’s remains, proclaimed him a saint and established the cathedral in Kirkjuvagr (Kirkwall).
