Bomber Command Memorial
Carrying on our theme of military history and remembering those who sacrificed so much, M and I visited the Bomber Command Memorial Centre today.
The ‘spire’ is the UK’s tallest war memorial at 102 feet tall (the height of the wingspan of a Lancaster Bomber).
The figures in front represent the 7 crew of the Lancaster piloted by ‘Dingy’ Young.. this was one of the planes that took part in the Dambusters Raid in 1943. Their plane was shot down on their flight home. None of the crew survived.
The walls around the spire contain the names of around 55,000 members of Bomber Command who did not survive the war.
The centre has an excellent exhibition detailing the history of Bomber Command. It doesn’t shy away from portraying the suffering by those countries who Britain and her allies were fighting against.
