For the family

Quirky

After our busy and interesting day at Ilkeston Hospital yesterday, I slept badly last night. We were due a delivery of bedroom furniture this morning after 7 am, so we up early. Just as well as they were on the doorstep by 7.15. The two gents did a first class job and were so helpful moving the 6 large boxes upstairs. When they were finished I took a picture of the van intending to blip it and the younger man asked if I wanted to take a picture of them. I accepted their offer to smile for the camera. They had willingly moved a couple of items from the bedroom to the garage to help.

By 9.30 I was wiped out and needed a nap. As we were having lunch we discovered the the wound on B’s chest was bleeding and the waterproof outer dressing needed to be punctured to drain the contents. We weren’t given any spare dressings yesterday and I didn’t have anything suitable in the cupboard.

I rang a local pharmacy to see what local services were available. The GP practice is closed at the weekend and the nearest hospital about is about 12 miles away in Burton. I was advised to ring 111 who took the details and said that someone would ring me back.

R came round to see us and as the bleeding continued she took us down to the pharmacy to get a supply of dressings and some other groceries.

I changed the dressing and had just finished when a nurse from 111 rang back. It was helpful that I’d seen the wound by then. It looks weird. The surgeon said yesterday that it will take 4-6 months to heal. The nurse on the phone was thorough and we agreed that if the bleeding restarts, I will take him to Burton A&E. So far so good this evening.

We have had a hectic week, so fingers crossed that things quieten down a bit tomorrow.
