Older than the ground I'm stood on!

This is the view from top of the Capelinhos lighthouse  on Faial. Today it looks out over a volcanic desert. Here the last major volcanic activity occurred. The eruptions in 1957 through to 1958 enlarged the island by 2.4 km² and forming the "Ponte dos Capelinhos."

Today the area has an outstanding, underground interpretive center.
