The Old Lace Factory
I was in Olney today for Bridge and saw this on my way to the venue. Have been to Olney many times and never noticed this before, but thank to now being a 'blipper' I have become more observant!
Bucks lace was a thriving cottage industry. My mother was taught lace making, using bobbins and a pillow stuffed with straw or horsehair, when she was 5 years old.
It was sold to shops etc by the village ladies, but was very poorly paid, considering how labour intensive the work was.
My mother taught both my sister and myself, but we were not inclined to use the talent for money making purposes!
Machine made lace killed the industry off but there are still a few groups of women who are carrying on the art.
