Flags Fluttering, War Memorial, Boxley

The flags were fluttering in the strong breeze at the war memorial in Boxley to commemorate Operation Overlord which heralded the D Day landings of 6th June 1944. Some of the facts surrounding the build up and the day itself are astounding - nine million tonnes of supplies came from across the Atlantic and around the world, along with two million troops in preparation for the assault on the Normandy beaches. Service personnel came from afar afield as the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Africa, India, the Caribbean and many other Europan countries. We owe every one of them our immense gratitude.
In the corner of the image is one of the metal statues of the unknown Tommy soldiers that are made by British Legion Industries in their factory a few hundred yards from where I live in Aylesford. They employ a lot of ex service personnel and do a stirling job making these. They also manufacture a lot of the road signs we see on major roads and motorways across the country.
