Bucket List item ticked off
We saved the best until last - Jungfraujoch. We were up early, which meant we were able to buy tickets at about half the price we were expecting - woo hoo! We went up via the new Eiger Express - see extras - where we had a gondola to ourselves. You then pick up the train for the final stretch - it goes through a tunnel in the Eiger and stops halfway so passengers can look through a series of windows in the mountain wall - that’s the bit I’ve always been fascinated with so it was a bucket list moment for me.
Then onto the top, which is a very well planned and executed visitors’ centre - we had perfect weather. The view down the Aletsch glacier, the largest in the Alps, was jaw-dropping - the main Blip. We spent several hours before coming back down via Kleine Scheidegg, on an infeasibly steep train that skirts the North Face in all its glory.
Also is a shot of John and Sarah with the flag on the plateau - it was pretty quiet there but still the couple in front of us spent an eternity taking photos with the flag - we were done in about 30 seconds! There was a huge queue for a bigger flag but I thought I’d end up getting in a scrap if we stood in that…..
A brilliant morning - we’ve been so lucky with the weather on this trip.
This afternoon we’ve been on a local cable car to a toboggan run - great fun and splendid views - see more extras.
Tomorrow we head to Zurich via Lucerne and the forecast is for the sun to be cracking the flags.
My appetite for mountains is sated. For now.
