I had hoped to replace the freewheel as well as the chain and chainring, swapping in one with one less tooth, but even with enough force on a wrench to make the spokes creak there wasn't the slightest sign of movement, so I'll have to keep this one until I can get up to Eastside to venture £6 on their advertised service of removing freewheels. The old chainring doesn't look too bad, being made for SS chains and therefore being slightly chunkier, but the chain was somewhat lengthened and was sitting high enough on the ring to be able to see daylight beneath it.
