Old Tenements
Continuing on the theme of my lunchtime wanders through Edinburgh, I did so again today....another hot and sunny one, with a warm breeze reminiscent of the type you normally find on holiday in the Mediterranean!
I followed roughly the same route as yesterday, but diverted into one of the cool shadowy closes, that radiate off the 'spine' of the Royal Mile and into Mylne's Court, where I took this blip.
The handsome old tenements here were the skyscrapers of their day and were restored around 15 years ago (they are student residences now for the University of Edinburgh). History just oozes from the brickwork and this little space of calm makes for a nice contrast to the Royal Mile, with its throngs of visitors, just a few steps beyond.
It has been a mightily hot day here (28C in the shade this afternoon) making it unpleasant for working. My rail journey home was disrupted due to signalling problems at Edinburgh and "critically high" rail temperatures (49C at the track). Our train (six carriages) rolled into Haymarket on the wrong platform, half an hour late but, being thankful for small mercies, I did eventually get home.
I'm sitting outside on the front doorstep typing this now (at 8.40pm) and it is still gloriously warm, with a relaxing breeze, as the sun head off for the night.
