Juneteenth commemorates this day in 1865
When a union general read orders in Galveston TX stating all enslaved people in the state were free according to federal law. Juneteenth was designated a federal holiday in 2021.
while the emancipation proclamation was in1863 it wasn’t until 1865 that all confederate states more or less complied. It took the thirteenth amendment to finally outlaw all slavery .
