Burgh Island

Did a 15 mile walk today on the hottest day so far. It was a figure of eight in the South Hams. This is Burgh Island and the Burgh Island Hotel.

Burgh Island is an iconic landmark on the South Devon coast. Dominated by the art deco Burgh Island Hotel, it is separated from the mainland by a tidal beach. Access is on foot across the beach at low tide, but when the sea comes in, the island can be accessed on the towering sea tractor.

Its setting made Burgh Island the perfect inspiration for Agatha Christie, and indeed it features (under different names) in two of her most well known novels: And Then There Were None and Evil Under The Sun

In the rolling Devon countryside we saw no one, but here on the strips of beach people were jammed together like flies on fly paper.

A walk to remember.
