Petrified Monks
We went to sleep last night and woke up this morning, to torrential rain.
We’ve driven down from the mountains into Provence proper and the weather has considerably improved. We are in Lourmarin, one of the very pretty “The most beautiful villages in France” villages.
We’re going to stay for a couple of days.
We came past these big rocky cliffs today at a place called Les Mées. There is a story explaining the rocks ( as there usually is!)
“As legend has it, they represent the monks of the Lure mountain who were petrified (literally) by Saint Donat during the Saracen invasions as punishment for falling in love with the beautiful young "Mauresques" women that a feudal lord brought back from a crusade.”
(According to Google.)
