Stuff and Nonsense

Large Heath Butterfly #5

Today I had my long awaited butterfly expedition with friends Paul and Daphne. We were specifically looking for fritillaries as I mentioned that I'd only ever seen one in France.
Paul had lined up 4 sites that they wanted to visit for varying reasons, but mainly for butterflies.
We started at Foulshaw Moss in Cumbria looking for Large Heath butterflies, White Faced Darters and of course Ospreys.  Some nice sightings of the two ospreys, lots of lizards and Swifts were had, but no WFD or Large Heath.  Even after waiting for 2 hours for the day to warm up, and questioning everyone we met, there were no signs, so we moved on to Meathop Moss just up the road.
Here we saw a few Large Heath butterflies - a first for me - but they are so difficult to photograph as you can't leave the boardwalk and they don't land very often. They were very small for something that has "large" in their name :)
Then we crossed the main road and went to Latterbarrow where the wildflower meadows were in full swing but there were sadly and very surprisingly, hardly any butterflies at all. Paul and Daphne said they'd never seen it so quiet.  One short glimpse of a very faded and battered pearl bordered fritillary was all we had and a couple of Ringlet and Northern  Brown Argus.
Finally we went up Arnside Knott for a last look for Frits, but there were none to be had.

Overall I had a lovely day with great company and fabulous weather in the afternoon, but the lack of butterflies is very concerning indeed.
