Sound Mirror

Anyone watching closely will see a remarkable similarity between my recent blips and those earlier in the year from Arell. This is because Mr Flum decided that he was super-interested in the same things and that's why we're here.

However, this Sound Mirror, on Abbot's Cliff, just East of Folkestone, was not on her list, it's a bit smaller than hers but stands at the top of an impressive cliff with an equally impressive hazardous drop if one should step back too far for a photograph.

It is one of seven in Kent alone, designed as an early-warning system during WW1. The sound of approaching aircraft is focussed by the dish and detected, giving a fifteen-minute opportunity to prepare defensive weaponry before an attack.

The invention of Radar rendered these mirrors obsolete and they stand as testament to defence of our country.

Quite by coincidence, while on the cliff, we were treated to a mini-airshow as two replica planes, a Spitfire and a Hurricane flew overhead, performed a roll and flew off, a third time they flew together, back to base
