St.Margaret's Churchyard, Addington

All I've managed to find out about Charles Whitburn was that he was a banker. He must have been an eminent one judging by his family tomb!
The monument in the background (in the shape of an obelisk) has a fascinating story behind it. It marks the burial place of Captain William Lockler who became the Lieutenant Governor of Greenwich Hospital after a distinguished naval career in which he was a strong influence on the young Admiral Nelson and who later regarded him as a lifelong friend. His wife is also buried there and pre-deceased him, dying at only thirty-three. There is a lovely quote at its' base about her - "Sincere to all and undisguised by art. Beset with the kindest and tenderest heart. With unaffected price and grateful ease, with every virtue and every power to please."
The extra is a different view of the Whitburn gravestone. I liked the contrast of the sculpture against the older and newer part of the church itself.
