The Great Gathering

The Great Gathering in York of the 6 remaining A4 locomotives.

Sir Nigel Gresley
Union of South Africa
Bittern
Dwight D. Eisenhower
Dominion of Canada
Mallard

This was to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of Mallard's record breaking run in July 1938.
It still holds the World speed record for a steam locomotive, 125.88 mph.

The trains were designed by Sir Nigel Gresley in the 1930's and built in Doncaster.
He didn't just want a high-speed locomotive, he wanted an eye-catcher that would tempt more people to travel by train.
So he built these graceful, streamlined beauties, with curves that caught everyone's attention.

Not only a gathering of trains, but also of people!
The place was full to capacity when we arrived, and so it was one person out and one person in!
Fortunately only had to queue for about 15mins, but there was a huge queue waiting when we came out. I would think at least an hours wait.

Difficult taking photos, but these were the best of the bunch!

A day out mainly for MrC, but grandson R and I enjoyed looking round the rest of the museum too, followed by a walk into York, lunch at our favourite Italian, and a walk round the town, and down The Shambles etc.

All got home feeling shattered!
But a good day had by all!
