What Do I See

Nick And The Longhorns

I took a trip down to Epping Forest today, an area where I grew up too many years ago now.

Nick Bowman, a photographer I know through some photo meets has been holding an exhibition. Nick spent a couple of years following the free roaming British Longhorn cattle that roam in the forest, that are used to help maintain the forest in a natural way.

When I was a child I can remember the free roaming cattle from Epping Forest wandering down the road eating peoples hedges and lawns. Apparently, in the late 80's they were removed, but as the forest became more unweildly to manage in the early 2000's, they (the city of London corporation that owns the forest) decided to re-introduce them These days, due to geofencing technology they don't roam quite as freely, so you don't see them wandering down the high street anymore, but it's probably best for all involved.

It was great to see Nick's pictures, they all looked superb and showed different aspects through the course of the year.

The exhibition is on at the Epping Forest Visitor's Centre in Chingford until September, if you have the opportunity to go and see.
