Maneki Neko, Lucky Cat

The story of Maneki Neko dates back to 17th Century Japan. A temple cat, it beckoned in the local ruler in time to save his life from a lightning bolt strike. Contrary to popular belief, the cat is therefore beckoning not waving.

These days the cat is displayed in Japanese and Chinese homes, shops and restaurants. This one is outside a local Chinese restaurant and I believe it is in danger of being catnapped as it beckons in customers. The world over, the cat is a symbol of friendship, good luck and wealth.

I've shot this on a long exposure to show its moving, beckoning left arm.
