Life is a Challenge!

MONO MONDAY - SUPERSTITION

As soon as I read the theme for today’s Mono Monday challenge, I knew immediately that I would be able to do this!

My mother was the most superstitious person I have ever met and these show a few of her superstitions and the things she used to say and do:

1. “Uncross those knives” - if they stayed like this, then you were destined to have bad luck and your friendship would be cut.  I still say this now, laughingly, if knives just happen to get crossed.

2. “Get those shoes off the table” - even if shoes were in a box, she would not let me put them on the table - that would mean further bad luck would visit you.

3. “If you spill that salt you have to throw some over the opposite shoulder to the hand you spilt it with”. What nonsense - but in her eyes, that would mean even more bad luck.

4. “You always put money into a new purse before you give it as a gift”.  My mother never bought me many purses, but when she did - or even if she bought Mr. HCB a wallet, there was always a coin in it, to ward off the fact that your friendship might not last.

5. “Never walk under a ladder - anywhere!”  I realise you couldn’t walk under these steps that we use indoors, but you get my drift.  However, my Mum would walk into the road, and almost get killed if she saw a ladder on the pavement which she couldn’t pass - now, getting killed would have been bad luck!

6. “Don’t you dare put that umbrella up indoors and definitely don’t put it over your head.”  I guess bad luck might “rain down on you” if you did that!

I think, without exception, and because as Christians, we are not at all superstitious, both Mr. HCB and I flout all these superstitions and we always laugh and quote my Mum when we do - not in a nasty way, but at least we remember her!

Good job I'm not superstitious, bearing in mind that my next eye surgery is due on 13th July!

Ah well, better go and take those shoes off the table, uncross those knives, make sure I don’t spill any salt, move the steps so I can’t walk under them and put the umbrella back in the cupboard.  Good old Mum - at least she got me a good Blip!

P.S.  Mr. HCB has gone off to Cheltenham to watch cricket today - let’s hope they play better than England did last night - I know they won, in the end, but there was a lot of angst for them to get there!
