Double-decker Terraces

Double-decker terraces – comprising of under-dwellings and over-dwellings – are a Hebden Bridge speciality.
Because of the narrowness of the valleys and the steepness of the hillsides, very few houses are built  on the flat and builders had to be more inventive and ingenious.
The under-dwellings (the lower two rows of windows) are accessed down the steps you can see at the end of the terrace (no vehicular access) and are built 'back to earth'.. The over-dwellings (the top two rows of windows) are accessed from the road you can see between the terraces and are 'through light' houses.
A unique form of property ownership, known as flying freeholds had to be developed in response to this configuration.
