This mornings sky
We drove up the West Coast of the Coromandel peninsula to the township of Coromandel where we will stay for a few days.
The road follows the coast with pohutukawa trees on either side. It’s quite a narrow, twisty road but very pretty especially today with the sun shining on the calm sea.
We stopped for lunch along the way and parked near a big old pohutukawa with aerial roots. I’ve seen pohutukawa with these roots before but it’s not common. I googled it but there didn’t seem to be much of an explanation. One theory is they often develop on pohutukawa growing on banks and rocky cliffs where they can search for crevices, pockets of soil and moisture to help keep the tree anchored and fed, That doesn’t apply to this tree though as it’s growing on a large flat area and the aerial roots haven’t reached the ground.
