Landslide
The figures say it all really. I stayed awake all night (mainly because our constituency did not declare until well after 4am) only going to bed after the joyous sight of that odious character Jacob Rees-Mogg losing his seat.
I got up again in time to watch first practice at the British GP and am catching up with developments in Downing Street before second practice starts in an hour.
Very pleased that we have retained our excellent local MP, who had to overcome a boundary change that might have worked against him if he hadn’t worked so hard to engage with constituents old and new.
The worrying figure for me is the four Reform MPs, including the revolting specimen that is Nigel Farage. His press conference was an example of what to expect from this shower, as multiple hecklers had to be removed whilst he stood there and insulted them. For those who say there are only four of them, what harm can they do, I would merely draw attention to a certain far right party in Germany during the 1930s who also won only a handful of seats at their first national election…
Keir Starmer is right - it is time for a change in this country. He’s been given a thumping majority to help him achieve that change. Unfortunately he has inherited a pretty broken country and it is going to take a lot of hard work to turn things around. Let us hope that the British people will understand that, and allow him a period of grace to get those changes underway before starting to complain that nothing has happened.
