Fly Yoga
I am surprised I haven't blipped one of these dazzling green flies this year, so decided today was the day to correct that situation. The fly is a Common European Greenbottle Fly (Lucilia sericata), an introduced species in the US but not considered invasive. Like most blow flies, they feed on dead material, both plant and animal, as well as poop of most kinds. I suppose that makes them kind of disgusting, but they are also so beautiful with their iridescent green tones. They are widely used in forensic science and the maggots are used in wound healing, so they are an insect with significant scientific importance. And, as you can see, this one is doing a little yoga with back legs gracefully extended in a fly version of Warrior Two!
It is godawful humid here today with temps sitting at 90 F. It is way too hot to enjoy any sort of outdoor activities especially since there isn't a cloud in sight. Even Jax couldn't muster much enthusiasm to chase the squirrels out of the yard, usually one of his favorite activities. We spent a very shot bit of time outside this morning before it got too hot and have now retired to the air conditioned indoors.
I've started hearing cicadas in the woods in the last few days. They are one of the sounds of summer to me and I don't mind them at all. Of course, we don't have them in the numbers that cause insane amounts of noise which helps.
We watched "Ghosts of Mississipi" last night which was very good. Based on the true events surrounding the assassination of civil rights activist Medgar Evers in the 1960's and the subsequent attempts to bring his murderer to justice (played wonderfully by James Wood).
I haven't made a dark decision yet today but maybe something with nuts...
