Stuff and Nonsense

Juvenile Great Spotted Woodpecker #64

Today was a woodland kind of a day. After a recommendation, we started off at Cally Woods looking for red squirrels and failed. It was ridiculously quiet at the hide with hardly any birds at all.
Disappointed, we headed up to Kirroughtree Visitor Centre and had a delicious toastie for lunch, then headed over to the wildlife hide.
Red squirrels here were also in short supply, with just one being seen for a few minutes in the 90 minutes we were there. That said, the feeders were full of little birds - robins, nuthatches, tits and finches and a family of woodpeckers. It was also lovely to see a pair of Jays who kept flitting in and out, but they were very skittish and didn't hang around for long.

Since hubby wanted to get back for the football (Well done England, you finally won a penalty shoot out!), we had a leisurely drive home seeing a handful of Red Kites on the way.

I've put a few other shots in a collage in extras including one of the kites and a couple of juvenile swallows being fed by a parent.

A thoroughly lovely day with much better weather than expected. Thank you Scotland, we'll be happy if this continues :)
