The Human Race

So many awe-inspiring sights today - my challenge is to give some sense of this.

Most of the route is lined with spectators (there's no charge or ticketing system), and the most amazing experience for competitors is to ascend the famous 'Solar Hill' like a pro on the Tour de France. Lively and friendly, everyone gets the full volume of cheers.

Almost as impressive is the succession of waves of swimmers, with the canal banks and road bridge lined with people. The organisers analyse flow and pinch points along the course and stagger starting times accordingly. There are so many in the 60 - 65 age group that each year now gets its own wave!

Beyond the numbers is the sheer support and respect that participants give each other. Generally although triathletes are interested  in their age group positions, they are mainly challenging themselves. The camaraderie and chatter amongst athletes is genuine, and spectators are generally generous to everyone.

It's over for another year, and in a few days 2025 will take less than an hour to sell out.
