LA BELLA VITA

Harry Gordon Selfridge finds peace

Inspired by the June 22nd blip by fellow blipper '13south' we drove to Highcliffe to see Mr Selfridge's grave at St Mark's Church. As I set the destination on Google Maps, it announced you may arrive after it closes.

We went anyway. No traffic. The forecast was mixed and it wasn't beach weather. We were lucky to enjoy a sunny day.

Drove down a narrow road and parked in a bay right outside the church. No-one around. The church was closed, but walked into the graveyard and soon found a sign directing us to the graves of Harry, his mother, and wife. (Harry's is the modest grave far right, with the flowers. His mother and wife have the elaborate ones to the far left).

Paused for a moment to reflect on his great achievement, and downfall. Remembered fondly how my dear late mum and I regularly shopped in Selfridges - in those days we could park outside in Orchard Street, and for free!

Found a delightful nature reserve nearby, 'Nea Meadows'. Had a stroll on the footpath round the lake. Only passed a few locals walking their dogs.

Then drove back to the High Street, parked at the back of the Co-op, a bargain 90p for 2 hours. Had coffee at 'The Paddle', and as the weather warmed up, time for a cider, so walked to 'The Oaks'.

Returned to the car via a long way round, including some fabulous views of the Isle of Wight and over to Poole Harbour.

Then back home to see the end of the Sinner match (yeah!!), and the oh so dull and disappointing Raducanu match.

Bed time now
