Église Saint-Vivien de Saint-Vivien-de-Médoc

Parts of this Catholic church date back to the 12th century. It has endured a rather chequered history, as over the years various parts have been rebuilt due to disrepair or damage caused by conflicts.
The concrete tower has always struck me as being rather unusual.
The old bell tower was damaged by lightning in 1877 and subsequently had to be demolished. A replacement was completed in 1882, although this was then destroyed in the second world war.
The tower you see now was finally completed in 1957. Today, the iron in the reinforced concrete has caused cracks in the facades of the bell tower and major restoration is required.
