My Private Repair Shop
A wonderful day due to a totally unexpected occurrence!
I’ve had my Dad’s guitar in the corner of our front room for years and years. A few years ago I saw from the label inside that it was likely a Spanish guitar bought in London. Eventually, last week I took it into a guitar shop, just around the block, for repair. The repairman made a video of the process and you can hear the instrument’s voice in the soundtrack. . . see link below!
The guitar is a combination of mahogany, pine and bone for certain parts and is from the 1950s. It was considered a good quality instrument at the time but not top of the range. The body is slightly smaller than the standard classical Spanish guitar.
I can’t recall my father ever playing it, nor do I know the history of when he bought it. It may have been directly in London or after. The price he would have paid new was £9 which is equivalent to about £300 today. Today on EBay it would fetch about 400 quid!
I will try to learn to play . . . definitely a methodical process as I am far from being musically spontaneous, as was the case with my piano playing!
Our immediate neighbours, both father and son, are both wonderful guitarists, and so I’ve invited them in for a concert!
This is Dad’s Sunday afternoon armchair, 1968 G-Plan made in High Wycombe.
