We spent the day in London: the main purpose of the visit was to see the exhibition at the Natural History Museum of black-and-white photographs by Sebastião Salgado. The exhibition is called "Genesis", and shows "some of the furthest and wildest corners of our world, portraying indigenous communities that continue to live in accordance with their ancestral traditions, and showing rare insights into their lands". The exhibition comprised over 200 large scale prints, including landscapes, portraits and natural history images. To call the exhibition stunning barely does it justice. It is one of the most impressive photographic exhibitions I have ever had the pleasure of visiting, for the range of subjects, for the excellent compositions, for the amazing scenes captured, for the quality of the monochrome prints - and for the fact that the whole exhibition was the work of just one extraordinary photographer.

To all of you who read this, if you are in or near London and can possibly get there, do visit the exhibition. It closes on 8th September.

After a couple of hours looking at the pictures we were desperately in need of a pot of tea, so we chose to wander over the road to the splendidly decorated cafe in the Victoria and Albert Museum. We sat there for quite some time just watching the other people - including this girl absorbed in her book. Afterwards, we stopped off at the riverside terrace of the Royal Festival Hall for a glass of wine in the sun and some more people watching before returning home.

A very enjoyable day.
