Eggshell

Just a record shot today. I found a little piece of eggshell this morning under the housemartin’s nest. So - one chick at least has hatched. Excellent news.

A photograph is appropriate as a record. I was very careful about picking the shell up, it is paper thin and fragile. To make the shot a little more interesting I placed the fragment on the cover of an excellent book I read a couple of years ago - “Guests of Summer” by ornithologist Theunis Piersma. Although housemartins are common birds closely associated with our buildings, it’s really interesting how much we still do not know about them. Theunis is dutch, so (if he’s interested in football) he’ll be rooting for his national team this evening.
