Garden Bug

I was trimming back some wisteria foliage which had been almost stripped by little black hairy caterpillars earlier in the year. This looks like one that made it to the chrysalis stage still alive. I found others.
However, they made such a mess of the plant that I'm afraid spray may come their way if they try it again next year.
Anyone know what it is?
