In memoriam

A rainy day that befits the occasion: my mom's cousin passed yesterday afternoon, completely unexpectedly.  She was my mom's age and they basically grew up together.  My mom just spoke to her a couple of days ago; her cousin was getting ready to go out to lunch with her sister when she just collapsed...

Mom's dealing with this as best as possible -- given that she is on the other side of the ocean.  After a certain age, how do you deal with the fact that any day could be your last?
