Umoona Mine

Coober Pedy pretty much only exists for opal mining. It is the only industry in the area. With apologies to anyone from here, it is the ugliest town I've ever spent any time in.
However, it is without doubt, interesting. Today we took a local tour, and if you're able to.put aside the very racist narrative from the guide, it was very interesting. We visited an open cast mine, saw down drilled mine shafts, went to many local sights including underground churches, shops and houses.
We walked through this mine and watched a documentary about the history of opal discovery and industry in Coober Pedy.
First extra extra is another view from in the mine. We walked down these tunnels. Even though I'm short I had to duck!
Second Extra is prospectors piles. Each of these piles has a shaft at least 30 feet deep beside it. They are all uncovered so take care! There are calculated to be more than 1.5 million shafts in the greater Coober Pedy area.
The third extra is the underground Serbian Orthodox church
