Professor Codman's Wooden Headed Follies
A group of excited children are gathered on the seafront in the sunshine to watch a performance of the traditional seaside puppet show, a show steeped in history, known as 'Punch and Judy'. They have been called to the performance by the 'Professor' (the puppeteer), he of the squeaky, rasping voice, and his assistant, the 'Bottler', traditionally the one who rounded up the audience and then went round with the 'bottle' to collect the monies.
Today Professor Codman, along with his assistant, called and the children came - to laugh and jeer and cheer and boo at his bidding, as they watched the time-worn tale of wicked, violent Mr Punch who beat his wife cruelly with a big stick, and who even threw the baby out with the bath water. And while these children may forget many things about their holiday by the seaside, they will never forget the day they sat on the promenade in the sunshine and watched a real, live, traditional 'Punch and Judy' show.
(PS - Due to this spell of unbelievably fine weather, we couldn't resist making the most of it and extending our stay at the seaside. Lucky us!)
