Who needs Rome
Today’s blip is of Inveresk, which I was minded to visit as I was reading in today’s Scotsman newspaper, that plans to dig exploratory trenches on the site of an important Roman fort have been backed by Scottish ministers ahead of a housing application for the site.
So armed with my trusty guide (looking towards the location of the fort), I walked to Inveresk to further my archaeological investigations.
The overall site comprised an extensive complex, including a Roman fort, adjacent civil settlement, one known and one probable bath house, a possible amphitheatre, field systems and temporary military camps.
Alas, there is not much visible to the naked eye (although, I do understand that there are the remains of a hypocaust in a private garden, but I did not think I should go trampling round someone’s begonias and geraniums, lol).
However, from previous research, it would appear that it was an important facility in the northern reaches of the Roman Empire which will maybe be expanded upon following further archaeological research being undertaken, prior to the houses being built.
Spero te bene habere diem. Vivat Roma!
