Ripapa Island

We ferried across Lyttelton Harbour and walked around Purau Bay to Ripapa Island.  The island has been used as a Pa (Maori fortification) in the early 19th century, and a quarantine station and prison in late 19th century.

During World War One, Fort Jervois was built on the island as part of New Zealand's defence system. It was garrisoned again in World War Two.

The island is now under the control of the Department of Conservation and after earthquake repairs, the heritage-listed fort buildings can by visited by tour boat.

We lunched In Pirate Cove, within sight of the historic buildings. (see extras).
