Chur
Today was very hot and sunny, so we decided to visit the Chur, which is the capital of Graubünden canton and the oldest city in Switzerland. Archaeological evidence of a settlement there goes back to around 3900 BC.
We decided to take the train there, and while the train fare is rather expensive (like everything else in Switzerland) the trains are such a joy to travel in, clean, quiet, air conditioned and so comfortable. The old part of the city is so charming with narrow lanes and pretty squares surrounded by Swiss style buildings. We wandered around the old city, stopping off for a cappuccino, and then decided to get the cable car up the mountain to see the view over the city. We felt that was a bit of a waste of time as the views from there were not as impressive as those from the top of the mountains around where we are staying. Back down in the city again we had a late lunch at a cafe, a Fitnessteller which is a plate of salads with grilled chicken.
It was a lovely day out, there was always plenty of water to find for Xena from fountains and water troughs, and we enjoyed seeing the city. It was a hot day, it got to 30C but it did not feel too hot as there was a slight breeze.
