Threads of History

Paid a visit to Whitchurch Silk Mill today, and it was fascinating to discover how much there is to consider when weaving anything, let alone a pattern using fine threads. Talking of fine and strong, the characteristics of pure, natural silk threads are amazing! If you ever get the chance to handle an actual silk coccoon then do.

The mechanic in me went all over the place thinking about the mechanisms involved in tensioning, threading, colouring etc, and with so many movements to make at varying rhythms I couldn't help thinking that weavers were potentially brilliant drummers as well.

I took may more abstract photographs of the mechanisms which might have baffled anyone except the true enthusiast, but I just liked the colours and lines.
